Curriculum redesign in further education colleges

Exploring current challenges and opportunities - This report details the findings of a 157 Group project supported by the Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS) and undertaken with support from the Centre for the Use of Research and Evidence in Education (CUREE). Seven action research projects aimed to establish the challenges and opportunities for FE Colleges to redesign elements of their curriculum offer in order to be more responsive to need.

The challenges of Stem provision for FE colleges

This is the report of a project undertaken with support from the Gatsby Charitable Foundation and in partnership with the AoC. The project aimed to develop a better understanding of the challenges further education colleges face in offering Stem (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) provision at level 3 and above. The report acknowledges the crucial role that FE colleges play in ensuring that learners are equipped with the relevant, high-quality Stem-related skills that are key to future economic growth, but finds that funding pressures and inconsistencies threaten their ability to deliver provision in this area.

Published jointly with the Institute for Learning (IfL), this publication reflects the activity and output from our innovative one-day workshop on 18 May 2012, which brought together sector leaders, teachers and learners to try to define what truly great teaching and learning is. The conclusions suggest that relationships, learner engagement and professionalism matter just as much as what happens in the classroom or workshop.
