157 Group congratulates FE leaders and staff recognised in 2013 New Year honours list
29th December 2012
The 157 Group congratulates all those who have been recognised in the 2013 New Year honours list for services to further education, including four leaders at 157 Group member colleges:
Dr Christine Braddock CBE, principal of Birmingham Metropolitan College, has been made a dame
Angela O'Donoghue, former principal at Sunderland College, now principal at South Essex College, has been appointed CBE
Peter Brown, former assistant principal international at Chichester College, has been appointed MBE
Eric Twigger, former chair of governors at Hull College, has been appointed MBE.
Lynne Sedgmore CBE, executive director of the 157 Group, said, "We would like to congratulate all those who have been recognised in the New Year honours list, and are very pleased to see the inclusion of four of our member colleges.
"I would particularly like to acknowledge Christine Braddock's achievements in leading Birmingham Metropolitan College through a successful merger; helping make it one of the top-performing colleges in the UK; enabling it to develop business partnerships and sponsorships with global companies; and spearheading one of the largest recruitment drives for apprentices in the UK. The college's commitment to outstanding teaching and learning, which includes a strong focus on its teachers' and leaders' continuing professional development, provides an excellent example for our sector."
Peter Roberts, chair of the 157 Group and principal of Leeds City College, said, "Sunderland College and Chichester College have been enormously successful in extending the global reach of English further education, attracting thousands of international students, as well as designing, delivering and validating highly sought-after courses in China, South Korea and several other countries. This is good for our economy, our sector and our reputation as a provider of world-class education, so it is right that the work of Angela O'Donoghue and Peter Brown should be recognised in this way.
"Governors play a vital role in the strategic leadership of further education colleges, and we are pleased that Eric Twigger has been recognised for his contribution to Hull College."

About the 157 Group
The 157 Group represents 28 of the most influential colleges in the FE sector. It was formed in 2006 in response to paragraph 157 of Sir Andrew Foster's report on the future of further education colleges, in which he argued that principals of large, successful colleges should play a greater role in policymaking.
