157 Group comments on new CBI report
31st July 2013
The 157 Group is extremely pleased to see the publication today of the new CBI report Tomorrow's Growth.
Lynne Sedgmore CBE, Executive Director of the 157 Group, said, "The CBI are absolutely right to highlight the real opportunities that innovative, high quality vocational education offer to young people. Further Education Colleges across the country work in partnership with major employers to offer just the kind of skills-rich, real-work based programmes that equip students to take their place in the world of work, and we are wholeheartedly with the CBI in arguing that these routes deserve more promotion.
"The report is right to highlight the need for better support for schools in meeting their duties around careers guidance. Young people need to know about all the options available to them and a vocational route to higher skills levels will be better for a great many of them than traditional A levels and a residential degree. The opportunity to earn and learn at the same time is very appealing."
Peter Roberts, Chair of the 157 Group and Chief Executive of Leeds City College, said, "It is encouraging that the government has welcomed this report, and, together with Colleges, is doing much to raise the profile of high quality vocational education. We hope that the CBI report will encourage all employers to engage with the design of exciting programmes in partnership with Colleges and universities so that their future skills needs can be better met."
