The 157 Group publishes its first Annual Review

3rd November 2009

03/11/2009 Tonight the 157 Group will be launching its first Annual Review.

Reflecting upon a dynamic year where the 157 Group has boosted its profile across government in learning and skills and related policy the review touches upon policy influence, the formulation of new partnerships and the Group's role in sector wide improvement, as well as individual success stories from within the 157 membership.

Within the introduction Graham Moore, Chair of the 157 Group, says:

"With our vision, networks and constructive approach, we are well-placed to influence key decision-makers. This review highlights the links to ministers, senior civil servants and parliamentarians across the political spectrum. Our impressive list of patrons now includes three eminent peers, and this has enhanced our ability to influence"

Tonight's 157 annual reception, hosted by Lord Morris of Handsworth, will be attended by over 170 individuals, including Kevin Brennan Minister of State for Apprenticeships, John Hayes Shadow Minister for Life Long Learning, Further and Higher Education, a wide range of parliamentarians, members of the House of Lords, national FE sector CEO's and a range of partner organisations.

Lynne Sedgmore, 157 Executive Director said:

"I am delighted that 157 has had such an exciting and positive year, a fact that is reflected in the excellent turnout anticipated at this evening's reception. I am proud to be leading an organisation that is at the forefront (?) of thinking on learning and skills policy. I am extremely motivated to build upon our success and ensure that the 157 Group remains at the cutting edge of the future of further education policy"

Alongside the Annual Review the 157 Group will be launching a unique publication '1 in 8, the voice of higher education students in FE colleges', introduced by David Lammy Minister of State (Higher Education and Intellectual Property), which celebrates the invaluable provision delivered by colleges in this area, and a set of case studies, based on excellent 157 examples of effective work on apprenticeship delivery and employment.

Notes to editors

The 157 group represents 26 of the most influential Colleges in the FE sector.

It was formed in 2006 in response to paragraph 157 of Sir Andrew Foster's report on the future of further education colleges in which he argued that principals of large successful colleges should play a greater role in policymaking.

The 157 Annual Reception will be held at the Atrium Restaurant, 4 Millbank, London from 6 - 8 pm on the 3rd of November 2009.
